"Makers of Mountains" Protagonist Wins Again: Feng Chia Board Member Zhi-Yuan Lu Awarded 2025 Future Science Prize

“At that time, we were like the Foolish Old Man moving mountains—no one believed we’d succeed, and even talking about dreams felt shameful,” said Dr. Zhi-Yuan Lu, Feng Chia University Board Member and semiconductor industry leader, in the documentary Makers of Mountains—A Century’s Gamble. Now, the film’s real-life protagonist has reached another milestone: for his pioneering work in non-volatile semiconductor memory, Dr. Lu has received the 2025 Future Science Prize in Mathematics and Computer Science, as this year’s sole awardee.

Feng Chia University again shined in technical competitions as Information Engineering student Chen-Yi Lin and alumnus Yen-Ting Kuo excelled in the “Cloud Computing” category at the 55th National Skills Competition, taking first and third place. Both advanced to the second stage of national team selection, aiming to qualify for the 2025 Asian Skills Competition and the 2026 WorldSkills Competition.

The largest iOS application development competition in Taiwan, the “10th Mobile Application Innovation Contest” Grand Final, was held yesterday (8th) at Virtuosi Hall, Feng Chia University. The event was co-organized by Asia’s largest Apple reseller STUDIO A’s campus brand Straight A, Feng Chia University, and National Taiwan University’s Apple RTC, with official support from Apple. This year’s contest set a new record, attracting 658 teams and 1,021 faculty and students from 71 universities and colleges across Taiwan. The competition was fierce and creativity abounded, showcasing the limitless potential of Taiwanese students in iOS application innovation.

The “Central Taiwan Ten-University Summer Joint Service Team,” jointly initiated by Feng Chia University, Tunghai University, and China Medical University in 2006, held the “20th Central Taiwan Ten-University Summer Joint Service Team Flag Presentation Ceremony” this afternoon (3rd) at Feng Chia University. Over the past 20 years, the service team has expanded from three to ten universities and colleges in central Taiwan, with nearly a thousand students participating and serving thousands of rural children, making it the largest and most historic cross-university summer service initiative in central Taiwan.

To enhance faculty and staff benefits and respond to the government's 114th academic year salary adjustment policy for military, public, and educational personnel, Feng Chia University recently announced a 3% salary increase for all faculty and staff, effective January 1 this year. After receiving approval for the salary scale from the Ministry of Education, the university will issue a one-time payment today (29th) for the salary differences from January to May, showcasing its appreciation and commitment to faculty and staff, as well as its proactive measures to strengthen talent retention and recruitment.

The semiconductor industry has been one of the most prominent industries in Taiwan in recent years. With the issue of net-zero carbon emissions, the high-energy consumption semiconductor manufacturing process is a challenge that the industry urgently needs to address. To continuously cultivate engineering and research talents with practical experience and capabilities, and to develop energy-saving equipment for high-energy consumption, Feng Chia University and Gallant Precision Machining Co., Ltd. signed an industry-academia alliance memorandum of cooperation on May 8 at Feng Chia University, represented by President Wei Wang and General Manager You-Wen Liang. Through the donation of instruments and equipment, they demonstrated their long-term cooperation idea of jointly establishing the "Advanced Energy and Thermal Management Laboratory."

The First Feng Chia University Technology Innovation Competition: From CDIO to Practical Stage, Inspiring Students' Interdisciplinary Creativity

Jointly organized by Feng Chia University's Office of Technology Development, Office of Sustainability and Social Responsibility, and Office of Industry-Academia Operations and Promotion, the "2025 Feng Chia University Technology Innovation Application Competition" underwent nearly six months of submissions and preliminary reviews. On May 2, the grand final and exhibition were held on the 8th floor of the Science and Aeronautics Building. The competition encouraged students to use innovative technology to solve practical problems, cultivating interdisciplinary integration capabilities. It attracted 70 student teams and over 300 faculty and students from across the university. Ultimately, 41 teams stood out and advanced to the finals, competing in the two main themes of "Digital Applications" and "Sustainable Development," showcasing their achievements.
