Feng Chia University Honorary Vice-President Jyh-Horng Chou Elected Fellow of the International Academy of Artificial Intelligence Sciences (AAIS)
Feng Chia University Honorary Vice-President and Chair Professor of the Department of Mechanical and Computer-Aided Engineering Jyh-Horng Chou has recently been awarded the distinction of AAIS Fellow by the International Academy of Artificial Intelligence Sciences (AAIS), in recognition of his sustained academic contributions to the fields of artificial intelligence and automation.
AAIS is the successor to the Asia-Pacific Artificial Intelligence Association (AAIA), founded in 2021, and serves as an international academic organization bringing together leading scholars in AI and the sciences from around the world. AAIS currently counts 2,532 Fellows, a roster that includes two Nobel Prize laureates, three recipients of the ACM Turing Award, and hundreds of international academicians affiliated with the National Academy of Sciences (NAS), the National Academy of Engineering (NAE), the Royal Society, and Academia Europaea.
Honorary Vice-President Jyh-Horng Chou holds a doctoral degree in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering from National Sun Yat-sen University. Since beginning his academic career at Kaohsiung Polytechnic Institute in 1983, he has devoted himself to Taiwan's technical and vocational education system, serving successively as Chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at National Yunlin University of Science and Technology, Vice-President and Acting President of National Kaohsiung First University of Science and Technology, Vice-President of National Kaohsiung University of Applied Sciences, and Vice-President of National Chung Hsing University. From 2013 to 2015, he served as Convener of the Automation Division under the National Science and Technology Council (NSTC) Engineering Research Center, and from 2018 to 2023 as Convener for Industry-Academia Collaboration Planning in the Electromechanical and Energy sector under the same center—accumulating extensive experience in both administration and research. In 2025, he was further honored with the NSTC's highest distinction, the Outstanding Research Fellow Award, becoming the first scholar at Feng Chia University to receive this recognition.
Since joining Feng Chia University in 2022, Honorary Vice-President Chou has applied his expertise in AI applications and net-zero carbon reduction to lead the integration of institutional resources. He spearheaded the establishment of the Office of Sustainability, promoted faculty learning community initiatives, and introduced general education courses in AI applications and net-zero sustainability—helping Feng Chia build a low-carbon, energy-efficient sustainability value chain in fulfillment of its ESG objectives and university social responsibility commitments.
In terms of scholarly recognition, Honorary Vice-President Chou has received numerous prestigious awards, including the Engineering Medal of the Automation Technology Society of the Republic of China, the Lifetime Achievement Award of the Chinese Automatic Control Society, the NSTC Outstanding Research Award, the TECO Award, the Sun Yat-sen Academic Culture Foundation Academic Publication Award, and the Outstanding Engineering Professor Award of the Chinese Institute of Engineers. He also holds fellowship in IEEE, IET, CSME, CACS, CIAE, and AAIA. From 2020 to 2025, he was continuously listed on Stanford University's "World's Top 2% Scientists" lifetime scientific impact rankings, based on Scopus citation data—a testament to the enduring international recognition of his research impact.
His research team has long collaborated with Taiwan's industrial sector to advance the research and application of Computational/Artificial Intelligence (CI/AI) technologies, including technology licensing and transfer, with achievements that have garnered significant international recognition. The team was selected as the highest-ranked winner by the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society (IEEE CIS) Industry Liaison Committee. From June 2014 to October 2018, IEEE CIS featured a dedicated "Industry News and Success Stories" column on its website, in which the team's Industrial Success Story—documenting their innovations in intelligent industrial technology development and breakthroughs in industrial applications—was spotlighted. During the period in which IEEE CIS maintained this column, the team stood as the first and only research team in the world to be featured for its achievements in industrial intelligent technology development. Following the 2018 redesign of the IEEE CIS website, these accomplishments were preserved as archival reference material for the global academic, industrial, and research community.
Honorary Vice-President Chou has dedicated more than four decades to education and industry. His election as an AAIS Fellow represents the international academic community's recognition of his lifelong contributions, and is a distinction shared with pride by all faculty and students of Feng Chia University.
